Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about camp facilities, health and safety, and what to expect during your stay.
What health forms are required for Summer Port?
All participants must bring a completed Scouting America Annual Health and Medical Record. Participants staying longer than 72 hours require Parts A, B, and C, including a physical dated within 12 months of the last day of port. Rotating leaders staying less than 72 hours require Parts A and B. Bring copies to check-in; school and sports physicals are not accepted as substitutes.
Do I need to complete a swim test before arriving?
No. All participants will complete a swim test at Summer Port, regardless of previous certifications or swim classifications. A pre-camp swim test is not required.
How are medications handled during Summer Port?
Prescription medications must be brought in their original labeled containers, and a Medication Dosing form should be completed for each participant taking medication. Medications are generally managed by designated adult leaders, with certain medications stored or administered through the Health Lodge when necessary.
What if I have special dietary needs?
Participants with dietary needs that cannot be accommodated by the regular menu should bring appropriate food substitutions. Refrigeration is available in the dining hall for certain items, and unit leaders should help coordinate dietary arrangements.
What sleeping accomodations are provided?
Campsites include canvas tents on platforms, with two cots per tent. Each campsite also provides a pavilion, picnic tables, running water, and shower and restroom facilities. Participants should bring their own beddings and personal camping essentials.
Can I use my cell phone or access Wi-Fi?
Cell service can be intermittent, depending on your provider. Wi-Fi is available in certain areas, including the Skipper’s Lounge and Lassiter Porch, but is intended for adult use. Ships are asked to collect and secure youth cell phones during the day.
What if I need accessibility accommodations?
Tanah Keeta offers some accessible facilities and may provide transportation assistance for participants with mobility needs. Ships should contact the Port Director before arrival to discuss accomodations.
What happens if severe weather occurs?
Port staff monitor weather conditions and follow established emergency procedures. Activities may be suspended, and participants may be directed to designated shelter areas. Ships should follow staff instructions and remain together until an all-clear is issued.
What uniforms should I wear during Summer Port?
Activity uniforms (“Class B”) are appropriate during the day and most evenings. Full field uniforms (“Class A”) are expected for dinner, campfires, and chapel. Closed-toe shoes must be worn at all times. The Trading Post does not sell Sea Scout uniforms or insignia.
What happens if I get sick or injured during Summer Port?
The Health Lodge is staffed 24 hours a day by qualified health officers who can assist with minor injuries and illnesses. More serious medical needs may be referred to a local urgent care facility or hospital. All accidents and illnesses should be reported to the Health Lodge.
